Understanding your results
BMI equals weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (BMI = kg / m²). If your weight is in pounds, use the kg to lbs converter before entering it here. Categories used here follow common adult cutoffs: underweight below 18.5, normal 18.5–24.9, overweight 25–29.9, and obese 30+. BMI is a screening estimate and does not measure body fat or fitness directly.
Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m is 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9.
Is BMI the same for men and women?
The standard adult BMI formula and category cutoffs are the same for men and women, but they do not account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution.
Can athletes have a high BMI and still be healthy?
Yes. Extra muscle can raise BMI without meaning excess body fat. Treat BMI as one planning signal, not a diagnosis.
